Have fun and dream big

Don't stress about not being the smartest or having the best grades. People who are entrepreneurs have a weird blend of creativity mixed with ambition and a dash of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). We're a lot like an artist in many ways -- very passionate individuals who need to keep their egos in check, but at the same time be fearless. -- Nick Veneris, founder of Xomba

  1. Its good to think this way! Most of the successful entrepreneurs today weren’t the smartest nor did they have the best grades. They just had a niche, passion, or a drive for a specific something and they went after it. They fearlessly worked on what ever it was that they were working on until it worked. For the most part these people were successful. They dreamed big, worked hard, and had fun when it all came to an end.

  2. Fearless is what you need to be a new business owner. You can’t think about the negative. You have to be positive and believe in your business so customers and others believe in you and your business. Not being the smartest isn't everything, if you’re having a problem with something you ask a friend or someone who can relate to your problem.

  3. Successful entrepreneurs are the ones who are the most creative with there investments or businesses. An entrepreneur has to find that balance between meeting the buyers’ needs and keeping their own interest in what they are doing for a living.

  4. I think most entrepreneurs are contrarians by nature. If everyone were on line ready to make a right turn, the entrepreneur would want to make a left.

  5. Is really impoertant tgo keep this present most of the time people put to much presure on themself, and forget to recognize al the good work that is been done.

  6. I totally agree with Prof.Bruce. You don't need to have a 4.0 GPA to be a successful entrepreneur one day. I think most of us at one point in time thought that in order to be successful in life that we have to be gifted or talented and have a high IQ. Then as we go along in life we meet and see average people doing better than the people who we thought would be more successful in life. I think to be successful in life, you have to know what you really want in life.

  7. Entrepreneurs need that passion blended with OCD to do well. Without that ambition and OCD their business wont do so well. An entrepreneur's focus on whatever they are working on is the most important thing because this is what they are all about.Without the continuing ambition and focus, their company won't succeed. So it doesn't matter if you have the best grades in school because as an entrepreneur, you don't have to worry about your employer looking back and seeing how you did in school becuase you know what you are capable of accomplishing and thats all that matters, especially as an entrepreneur.

  8. Agnes makes an interesting point. Emotional intelligence can get your further than academic intelligence.

  9. I totally disagreed with Professor Bruce on this one I feel only 1 in a million successful entrepreneurs didn't focused on being smart. There is so much to know about owning a business that education should be your main focus. The last thing you want to do is start a business and run into a road block because you didn't take time to educate yourself. This could prove to be costly and you may find yourself asking SCORE for help to keep you business from going under

  10. Prof Bruce is right. To many peopel these days think that if you are not top in your class that you will not have a good life. I do not think that is true. There are plenty of Americans who have a business that where not the top of their class. As long as you have a dream, then your class rank or how well you did in school should not matter. People look at grades to much these days and not at the true character of a person.

  11. most of successful business owners are creative, work hard, and also ambitious to be successful.fearless is a good idea but i think it is a second step.any successful entrepreneur need to have a positive fear which it means responsibility, giving much time to the business and taking care of customers.

  12. This is a good one. Alot os the richest entrepreneurs did not even complete college. For example Bill Gates. As long as you have the will and creativity you can be successful.

  13. I believe that people have to know what they want in life in order to be successful. In the real world it just gets tougher and challenging. Having the perfect skills will get you that job.

  14. I think there should be made a distinction between striving toward “being smart” (whatever your definition of that is) and trying to get the best grades in the class. I agree that these days many students put too much emphasis on getting good grades instead of focusing on learning new skills and developing their own mind, which are essentially the keys to success in life. But in my opinion, students are as much at fault in this case, as is the education system in general. On the other hand, I don’t think there is absolutely anything wrong with trying to be a smart person. On the contrary, I think that having intellectual curiosity and the ambitions to improve yourself are very important, because at the end that’s what help us become better human beings (in all departments of living, including managing your own business). And is there any better way improve yourself than through education?

  15. I also disagree with Professor Bruce, you should work as hard as possible to be the best at anything including school or being an entrepreneur. Being passionate and fearless is great but don’t let that get the best of you. It is always good to have something to fall back on.

  16. I believe if you do something that makes you happy, you will never work a day in your life. Professor Bruce, you make a good point, people who are entrepreneurs have a weird blend of creativity mixed with ambition. It takes a well rounded person with motivation and drive to become successful. Many entrepreneurs start off with a creative idea and stick with it and work on it to make it the better than its competitors.

  17. Have fun, dream big...... thats my motto. I believe if you dream really big, even if you don't necessarily get what you want, whatever you do get may still be better than what you would have achieved if you had played it safe and set your goals smaller. Life is like business.... all about risks

  18. I don't think grades really matter when it comes to having your own business. You can have straight A's but if you don't know how to talk to people then a got that never even went to college can have a more successful business than you. To succeed at your business I think the key is drive. If you don't have the drive then when adversity comes your way then quitting will seem like your only option all the time. Drive turns adversity into opportunity and makes you successful.

  19. I think that quote is true. Passion gives way to successful business practices. It good to have the know how of running business, but you need to be creative and passionate too. In the real world grades don't matter as much as being driven to succeed. Once the person has the drive they must be willing to keep going no matter how hard the road gets. Giving up is the very last option considered.

  20. I agree with professor Bruce in a way and disagree with him another. I feel like your grades don't matter to you in life in the long run, but if you don't get anything out of school, your not going to be a successful business owner. If you dream big and continue to do what you want to do and strive to be the best no one will stop you in your journey of being a successful entrepreneur.

  21. I do believe that it is true that you don’t need to be the smartest person to succeed as an entrepreneur. The most successful entrepreneurs are the ones with the freshest and newest ideas; you don’t need to be the smartest person to do that. Having the ability to think outside the box is what you need.

  22. I couldnt have said it better myself! Many of the people with the best ideas are not or were not the best students. Success begins with an idea, is sought out with determination and executed with obtaining the best resources. If you have an idea, go for it.

  23. Well said Prof Bruce many times the biggest dreamers are the most successful. E.I Christopher Columbus, the Wright brothers. Many times all you need is a dream and hard work and you can go far. Never let anyone steal your dream.

  24. I absolutely agree that each one of us needs to have a little bit of OCD in order to accomplish anything in life. Other wise, how would we stay focused on our goal.

  25. I agree it takes a blend of different characteristics to become a succeful entrepreneur. You need to be creative to deliver something new to everyone. You need to be ambitious to persue your dream. Its important to have these characteristics and im sure every entrepreneur has a mix of all of them.

  26. Professor bruce this is so true. Many entreprenuers are just like artist. not being the smartest or not having the best grades should not discourage anyone. there are plenty of people who didnt even graduate highschool who have become successful entreprenuers

  27. Most students only care about their grades, byt not about what they really know. They memorize the material for a test without understanding and two days later forget everything. We should not worry about our grades as much as about what we have learned and accomplished. We should graduate being proud of ourselves, of our skills and knowledge that prepares us for the business world.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with most of your comments, but I also think successful entreprenuers have to be chameleons. They have to adapt to change because we live in a changing world and nothing will stay the same forever. So if even you start out successful, if you resist change you will not stay that way until the end.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If everyone thinks the same and reacted the same way, the entrepeneurial spirit would not exist. Entrepeneurship is about doing what you want and thinking out of the box, innovation.

  30. i completely agree with this! you should not worry about your grades because some people are not good test takers, yet become very successful in their life, without the high grades. That what makes each one of us unique!

  31. While I agree with what Prof. Bruce has said, I think that it is also important to have common sense and be "book smart" to a certain degree. Having both as a basis helps. I also believe that being in the right place at the right time has a lot to do with this and being capable to see what others aren't able to realize.

  32. I completely agree! I also agree with what amanda says! believe me in highschool i was always an A student now in college I do not always get As and I do not think getting all As makes a person successful!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree 100%, although good grades help at times it is not the end of the world. There is a lot more to being successful. Applying yourself and being dedicated and passionate goes a long way. I also think it is important to always be dressed at least in a business causal attire, you never know who you are going to meet and be able to make an impression on.

  34. Entrepeneurs are by nature a little reckless. Why else would they risk everything to start a business instead of earning a steady paycheck like everyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The best ideas are usually the craziest. There is nothing wrong with wanting to do well in conventional things in life like school but people too often forget the reason why they are there and their passion fizzles out. Once passion for an idea is gone so is the entrepreneurial spirit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Usually, good ideas come from people who are not afraid to take risks. It is important to continue to take those risks or else progress may be impeded.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Although I agree that it's important to be passionate about your ideas I think it is unfortunate that some entrepreneurs turn away from education to pursue them. Imagine the strides some may have made with the added experience of a well-rounded education.
