Communicating with college seniors and recent grads

Conventional wisdom suggests that it is a good idea, after college graduation, to get some experience working for a company before trying to start your own business, but we hardly live in unconventional economic times. Starting a business can be very difficult but, in this current economic climate, so is finding a job.

The Small Business Professor blog is dedicated to discussing new ideas concerning, arguably, the hardest part of one’s job, "getting going." Whether it is the best way to find a job or ways to get a small business started, The Small Business Professor (Bruce Freeman) will consult a host of experts regarding marketing, public relations, funding sources, business plan development or the creation of new ideas in order to find the keys to success.

I am eager to hear from recent college graduates.

  1. I am not a recent college graduate but i will be graduating next semster. I do believe getting a job for most graduates will be hard if you aren't already employed or in an internship in which they may ask you to come on board full time. This blog can be very beneficial to the people young people who are looking for jobs and need some ideas and guidence to get started.

  2. I graduate in May 2010, and I hope and aspire to get hired full time. I have had some wonderful opportunities with companies as an intern, so I hope to continue with one of them. I would recommend for students of all majors to attain an internship or a few throughout school. Because it gives you experience over your competition and we all know what it comes down to, winning.

  3. I am graduating in December and luckily already have a job lined up. It didn't come easily though. I worked hard through years in doing many internships, attending work shops and job fairs, and made sure my name was out there. I believe this is the only way a college grad will get hired right out of college. Simply having that degree isn't enough anymore.

  4. In May 2010, I will be a graduate and entering the job market is a bit frightening. However, knowing how tough things are I have decided to go to graduate school to further my skills. I will also be checking this site for more advice for us graduates to help improve my chances in the job market.

  6. I will also be graduating in May, and will be getting an internship for next semester. Without an internship I do not think I would be ready to jump right into "the real world." An internship will help me improve my skills in the business field and help me prepare to work in business for the rest of my life. The blog is a great tool for students to refer to for advice and tips on getting going. Blogs are often a better tool than big name websites because you can read real people's opinions and relate.

  7. I'm going to be graduating in May, and I know it's not going to be easy for me to find a job. My plan is to look into internship two months before my graduation. Hopefully, the jobs are going to be better next year, and more people are going to be hiring. If it's going to be worse than it is now, I will probably get a job anywhere until the market gets better.

  8. I am not graduating just yet. But I do currently work for a company that is very prestigious and beneficial to me. I also plan on applying for many internships before graduation. I want to be fully well rounded in every aspect of my major before heading out to the real world.

  9. I have my associates degree after graduating college and that taught me is there always a different way to reach the same goal. When it comes to jobs it going to be more about your networking then the degrees a person has.

  10. Great feedback. Kemmy's idea of doing a number of different internships is good advice. Opportunity comes from opening as many doors as possible.

  11. I'm going to be graduating in May, and I know it will not be easy to find a job and I am a little frightened about searching for one. I plan on doing an internship, which in the long run will benefit me by teaching me skills I will need in the job market, instead of just graduating and jumping into a job with little to no experience.

  12. Getting a job after graduation will be hard but people still have to search for opportunities out there. Having job experience will make things a little bit more easier to find a job.

  15. I definitely agree, it’s important to get real world experience and work/intern for a company before starting your own business.

  16. Ulimately, I think it depends on the type of job one is looking for. For example, I am graduating in the spring therefore looking for a good job is on my mind often. However, I am prepared to be creative with my job search. Anything that will set me apart from everyone else is beneficial. And for us upcoming graduates I think that we can be a little more versatile with our job search because we are still young.

  17. It is a good idea to start a business after working for someone else. This way new entrepreneurs do not need to learn on their own mistakes but on the mistakes of the company they have worked for. I myself am thinking about opening a restaurant in the future, but I definitely know that education itself isn’t enough to start running a successful, profitable business.

  18. I am graduating in December and I can tell you that the job market right now is very slow in hiring people. I have friends that graduated last year and are still having trouble finding a job. I have had a couple interviews with companies, but most of the companies are telling me that there firing more than hiring. You have to keep going strong whether you start a small company like a painting company or something else but if you start small, your company could grew tremendously with the work effort.

  19. As hard as it already is in finding a job/career, the hunt and search to find an internship is becoming tough as well. I have gotten a lot of feedback from close friends and relatives that said that a lot of companies are becoming more strict on picking an intern. The applicant have to have specific characteristics, work ethic, experience, education, etc. Some places are even looking if you have done any volunteer/charity work. So it is very important to take and grasp every opportunity that comes your way. Carpe Diem, which means "SEIZE THE DAY!."

  20. I think it is crucial for any college student to start a job with a specific company before they do anything. Recently graduated college students have loans and most likely some debt to pay off. Starting a business while already owing money might not be the greatest idea. Which is why I believe students should make their greatest effort into getting a job first, to economically stable themselves. I also believe getting out there in the real world will also open your eyes up in ways school never could and probably never will. It will give you the experience that school didn’t and show you things you will need in order to really succeed. It is also good for your resume. Let’s say you do get a job, and after a few years you leave it to start your business and your business flops, you at least have some type of work experience on your resume in case you needed to look for another job.

  21. I will be graduating in May as well and the thought of entering the everyday work force is daunting. As of right now my plan is to find a job before May is over, but I am aware that that may not happen. So back-up plan, or Plan-B, for the summer is to obtain an internship, and I even have a Plan-C just incase I don’t find anything that fits me. My Plan-C is to go back to school to get my MBA. Something I plan on doing anyway, it just may be sooner then later.

  23. I will be graduating in May of 2010 and finding a job will be hard. That is way i started my own business. But even with my own company, finding jobs to do is still hard. I will graduate will a degree in accounting yet my company is a contracting service. People find that strange until i explain to them that even during this down time people still want to upgrade their houses. I have a job that i am happy with and when i graduate i will always have a degree to fall back on just in case.

  24. we should thinking about the real world after school and not only thinking about it but to start communicate with it, especially senior students.college seniors and recent grads can be an intern with any company or start looking for any kind of job.they can also educate themselves about the jobs market through newspaper and t.v.

  25. Ok on this story i feel like i have a question/statement to say. I sometimes feel like college is a waste of time because even if i get out of school with a degree, the person who worked out of high school instead of going to college is usually more qualified then me because of experience. Want to know what your opinion is Professor Bruce?

  26. I will be graduating in May; I will definitely be applying to get an internship at a company just to get a feel for the work. Hopefully I can find the right company and have a job lined up when I graduate. Just having a diploma will not get you far any more, now a days you need a masters degree just to get noticed.

  27. I am graduating this may and from my experience I haven’t been getting the response I thought I would get when I apply for jobs/companies. Many of my friends are also struggling with finding a job..I am starting to look for internship opportunities to get my foot in the door and I think with any newly graduate from a university, I am hoping my dream job is out there for me.

  28. Well the idea behind the blog is cool, because i myself have no idea where to start looking for a job. Since i have been on the site i have developed some good ideas. I have to tell my other friends to check out the blog, it might give them some guidance.

  29. Reggie, I think that in the short term, the person who will get a job right out of high school will be better off than the person who decided to go to college. That is he will get more experience and also will make some money. While a person who decided to go to college will first of all, have to invest some money into his education, and second of all, it will be much more difficult for him to compete on the job market with people who already have experience. However, I think that in the long run, a college graduate will have better chances of advancing at job because of the skill that he had learned while in college.

  30. I'm going to be graduating this semester. My major was music. A degree in music doesn't really open up a lot of opportunities after you graduate. I'm teaching at a music center now. It's decent money but I'm going to need more. I guess I can take on a couple more jobs at other music places. At least that would get my name out there. I could maybe even start teaching privately.

  31. I will be graduating at the end of this semester. Finding a job right now is very difficult I have been proactive in looking for a job but nothing has happened. I currently am working which I am luck for so if I can’t find a job I hope that I could stay within the company and find a job that I can learn and put what I worked hard for in good use.

  32. I am not a recent graduate but I think a good idea for those that are still in college is to start looking for an internship or something entry level in your field of study befor you graduate. This is what I did and now I am in banking and the benefits are that they will pay for any class related to business that I pass with a C+ or better. Another reward is that upon graduation I will be considered for a salary position

  33. Getting a job is one of the hardest things to do in this economy. Thankfully i have a job now, and i dont plan on going anywhere anytime soon.

  34. This is my last semester of college, and I recently finished an internship with a marketing firm, which was a good experience for me. Now the firm wants to hire me as a full time employee when I graduate, so before you graduate and go job hunting, an internship will be very helpful.

  35. Getting a job right now is a problem a lot of people are facing. The economy is down no one is hiring not many people know what to do. Advice and guidance are probably very highly valued right now. I'm going to be graduating soon and I'm still thinking about what I want to do once I get out there.
